Born in Mineola, New York, on April 26, 1965, Kevin George Knipfing is better known by his stage name, Kevin James. He was raised in a Catholic household in Stony Brook, New York, with his father, Joseph Valentine Knipfing Jr., who ran an insurance company, and his mother, Janet, who worked in an office. Kevin has a sister named Leslie and an older brother named Gary Valentine, who is also an actor and comedian.
Kevin was a talented athlete who excelled in wrestling while attending Ward Melville High School. Just ahead of his friend and future professional wrestler Mick Foley, he secured the top spot on the wrestling squad. They were both heavyweight competitors. After graduating in 1983, Kevin attended the State University of New York at Cortland, where he played as a halfback on the varsity football team.
